Folk Song collected by Phil J. Thomas and adapted by Mr. I

HERE COMES HENRY CURRIE,  HE’S ALWAYS IN A HURRY,

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD.

HE MAKES HIS HORSES GO,  THROUGH THE DUST AND THROUGH THE SNOW

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD.

YOU SHOULD SEE HIM SPRINTIN’ TO THE BALL AT CLINTON

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD.

HE MAKES THE LADIES PRANCE, JUST LIKE HIS HORSES DANCE

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD

Chorus;           WHEN YOU HEAR THAT WHIP  A’POPPIN

YOU CAN BET HE’S GOT A LOAD

WHEN YOU HEAR THAT SWEET VOICE SINGING

STAND UP ROWDY ON THE CARIBOO ROAD.

THE DRIVER’S ON THE DECK  WITH A RAG AROUND HIS NECK

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD

WHILE THE SWAMPER IN THE STABLE,  MAKES SURE THE TEAMS ARE ABLE.

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD

WHEN THE ROADS ARE IN A MIRE,  THEN THE FREIGHTERS EARN THEIR HIRE

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD

BUT THEY CAN BEAT THE WEATHER WHEN THEY ALL PULL TOGETHER

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD.

Chorus

IN A WINK AND A SHAKE, WE’LL BE UP IN WILLIAM’S LAKE

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD

AND WE’LL SURE BE FEELIN’  SWELL ONCE  WE GET TO QUESNEL

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD

NO MORE MUCK , NO MORE DIRT AND I CAN FINALLY CHANGE MY SHIRT

TEAMING UP THE CARIBOO ROAD.

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

Judy McAlpine

THE MOON IS OUT,  THE STARS ARE BRIGHT,

IT’S QUIET ON THIS WINTER NIGHT

AND IN THE SKY SO COLD AND CLEAR,

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS START TO APPEAR

RED LIGHTS SPARKLE

ORANGE LIGHTS SPARKLE

YELLOW LIGHTS SPARKLE

PINK LIGHTS SPARKLE

GREEN LIGHTS SPARKLE

BLUE LIGHTS SPARKLE

PURPLE LIGHTS SPARKLE

ALL THE LIGHTS SPARKLE

THESE ARE THE COLOURS OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

BUT WHEN THE SUN POKES OUT HIS HEAD

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS ALL GO TO BED.   SSSS………

A delightful tune I picked up from  ‘Orff Canada’.  Have used it many times in class and in concert. I have a collection of large coloured cloth sheets. The children stand and circle with their coloured sheet when their colour is sung. At the end the children sit and place the sheets over their heads and sleep until I come to wake them up.

A haunting beauty. I teach it on the recorder to my Grade Twos every year.  It’s a great song to sing as well. The melody is Native, the words were composed in the 1930s. Can also sing “BOOM DE DE AH DA”

CANADA IN MY POCKET

Michael Mitchell

Chorus:           I’ve got Canada in my pocket. A little bit of history.

A penny and a nickel and a quarter and a dime

mean a lot to you and me.

It’s more than pocket money. They’re the symbols of our land.

they’re pictures of important things for which this country stands.

The maple leaf, the maple leaf, It’s a beautiful sight to see.

It waves, ‘Hello’ to us below from the top of a maple tree.

and with every year that passes. It grows like you and me.

So, should we all grow straight and tall like the lovely maple tree.

The beaver, oh the beaver, It’s a beautiful sight to see.

He’s a happy, furry animal like a teddy bear with teeth.

He’s never ever lazy. He works all night and day.

Building houses for his family. He’s got no time to play.

Chorus

The schooner, oh the schooner. It’s a beautiful sight to see.

It’s a great big wooden sailing ship that can sail across the sea.

And it brings to other countries, the things that people need

And it brings back things like chocolate bars and books for us to read.

The caribou the caribou, it’s a beautiful sight to see

He’s a really big strong animal I’m sure you’ll all agree.

He looks like Santa’s reindeer. And he loves it when the wind blows cold.

So he lives up north with the polar bears, cause he likes the ice and snow.

Chorus.

A GREAT AND BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY

(Gary Huntbatch)

Chorus:           IT’S A GREAT AND BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY, CANADA, OH, CANADA

SO BIG IT GOES FROM SEA TO SEA, AND THIS IS THE STORY OF CANADA

BEFORE THIS LAND WAS COVERED WITH ICE

WE HAD DINOSAURS PLENTY A-ROAMIN’

BUT, WHEN THINGS WARMED UP AND THE ICE WAS GONE

THEY NEVER RETURNED AGAIN.

THE FIRST NATIVES WHO CAME TO LIVE

HUNTED AND FISHED FOR FOOD TO EAT

AND THEN CAME ALONG THE BRITISH, AND THE FRENCH

WHO FARMED THIS LAND AND MADE CANADA GREAT !

Chorus

THEN WE DIVIDED UP THE LAND,

THREE TERRITORIES AND TEN PROVINCES

BUILT A BIG RAILROAD AND A LONG HIGHWAY

FOR US TO TRAVEL GREAT DISTANCES

NOW, THERE ARE AEROPLANES UP IN THE SKY

OVER LAKES AND MOUNTAINS THEY DO SOAR

AND PEOPLE LIVE HERE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

A BIG CANADIAN FAMILY  THAT’S FOR SURE

Chorus

SEARCH FOR SASQUATCH

(Gary Huntbatch)

A silly story about Mr. I and Gary in the forest searching for the ever elusive Sasquatch. Or, is he called ‘Big Foot’. One can never know for sure until we meet one and ask them.
