ANTARCTICA  SONG

Yurgen Ilaender (Mr. I)

DO ANTS,   LIVE IN ANTARCTICA?     NO , THEY DON’T

DO TICKS,   LIVE IN ANTARCTICA?  NO,  NO, THEY DON’T

BUT IF YOU LOOK WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT

WELL, YOU MIGHT SEE A MITE,

YES, YOU MIGHT SEE A MITE OR TWO

FROM MT. EREBUS,    TO THE SOUTHERN SEA

A WINGLESS MITE,   IS THE LARGEST LAND ANIMAL YOU WILL SEE

DO PLANTS,  GROW IN ANTARCTICA,    YES,  THEY DO

DO PLANTS,  GROW IN ANTARCTICA,  YES, YES, THERE ARE A FEW

SEE THE HAIRGRASS

AND IF YOU LOOK REALLY FAST, YOU CAN SEE THE PEARLWORT TOO

DID  ROBERT SCOTT,     IN 1912

SEE THE HAIRGRASS AND THE PEARLWORT,  FLOWERING BY THEMSELVES

DID ROALD AMUNDSEN,   A NORWEGIAN MAN

SEE THE AURORA AUSTRALIS  DANCE,

AS HE TRAVELLED ACROSS THIS  ICY LAND     (slilde up) (E major form to 12th)

SIX MONTHS OF WINTER  (slide down)  SIX MONTHS OF SUMMER  (up)

SIX MONTHS OF WINTER  (slide down)   SIX MONTHS OF SUMMER

DO FISH LIVE IN ANTARCTICA?  YES THEY DO.  ICE FISH LIVE IN ANTARCTICA

AND THEY’RE SUPER COOL.  THEY HAVE ANTI-FREEZE SO THEY WON’T EVER SNEEZE

AND THE ICE DOESN’T FORM AND THEIR BLOOD DOESN’T FREEZE.

IT’S THE HIGHEST, DRIEST, COLDEST, WINDIEST, CONTINENT ON EARTH

98 % IS COVERED WITH ICE.  – ANTARCTICA !       Brrrrrrrrr………. “I’m Cold !”

HIGH & DRY

Gary Huntbatch

We’re high and dry in Antarctica, as south as you can go.

Yes, very, very high and very, very dry and cold and windy too.

Don’t need no umbrella ‘cause it ain’t gonna rain

Throw away that old snow shovel ‘cause it hardly ever snows.

Put on your warm clothing ‘cause it gets very cold.

And the temperature drops way down to seventy six below.

We’re high and dry in Antarctica.,as south as you can go.

Yes, very, very high and very, very dry and cold and windy too.

No polar bears, no trees, no wolves, no deer and no ‘mooses’.

No pigs, no goats, no cows, no sheep, no horses and no ‘gooses’.

Just one long day, and one long night.

And lots and lots and lots and lots of ice.

It is the highest continent with lots of mountain ranges

The Transantarctic and Prince Charles to name but just two.

There’s lots and lots of coal. But, a treaty says no mining.

But even if they could we don’t want more fossil fuels.

We’re high and dry in Antarctica, as south as you can go.

Yes, very, very high and very, very dry and cold and windy too.

And cold and windy too. High and dry, and cold and windy too.

WE STUDY ANIMALS,  WE STUDY WEATHER,  WE STUDY ICE

AND WE KEEP AN EYE ON THE OZONE LAYER.

WE’VE STUDIED THE FISH. WE’VE STUDIED THE BIRDS

WE’VE STUDIED THE ICE AND SNOW

WE’VE STUDIED THE PLANTS. WE’VE STUDIED THE ROCKS,

AND THE COLD, COLD WIND WHEN IT STARTS TO BLOW.

 SEALS

By Mr. I (Yurgen Ilaender) & Gary Huntbatch

SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS,        SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS,

Chorus:            SEALS LIVE IN ANTARCTICA,

THERE ARE FOUR KINDS OF SEALS

THAT CALL IT THEIR HOME.

TWO COME TO VISIT ONCE IN A WHILE

FOUR PLUS TWO MAKE SIX.

SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS,     SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS

Verses: I’M A WEDDELL I CAN DIVE REAL WELL

OVER A THOUSAND FEET

I CAN STAY UNDER WATER FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES

MY LARGE EYES HELP ME TO SEE.

SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS,     SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS.

I’M A CRABEATER YOU’LL SEE LOTS OF ME

NEARLY THIRTY MILLION OF US

MY BIGGEST THRILL IS TO EAT LOTS OF KRILL

BUT OVER CRAB I DON’T MAKE A FUSS.

SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS,      SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS

I’M A LEOPARD SEAL BETTER NOT PET ME

FOR I AM VERY VICIOUS

IF YOU WERE A PENGUIN SWIMMING BY

I WOULD FIND YOU QUITE DELICIOUS.

SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS,      SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS,

I’M A ROSS SEAL, AND YOU’RE VERY LUCKY, IF YOU EVER AT ALL SEE ME.

THE EXPLORER JAMES ROSS WAS LUCKY BECAUSE HE SAW ME FIRST IN 1840

SEAL, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS, SEALS.

I AM AN ELEPHANT SEAL,  BUT I DON’T HAVE A TRUNK OR BIG FLOPPY EARS

I AM A FUR SEAL,  I HAVE FUR AND CUTE LITTLE EARS.

Talking part:  SOMETIMES WE COME TO VISIT.  ANTARCTICA IS FULL OF TASTY TREATS.

Chorus:  SEALS LIVE IN ANTARCTICA………

ADELIE PENGUINS

Gary Huntbatch

In September or October the Adelie penguins decide to raise a family.

So off they go to the same old breeding ground. And there they form a rookery.

They journey miles and miles across the ice and snow.

Yes, the ice and snow.

When they arrive they compete for the best space

To build a nest safe from the Skua’s beaks.

Putting stones around the nest, then two eggs Momma lays.

Taking it in turns to get food and mind the eggs.

Yes, they mind the eggs.

When the chicks are big enough they’re left in a nursery,

With all the other chicks all waiting to be fed.

Sometimes a hungry Skua will swoop and take a chick.

‘Cause when parents go for food the skua come and take their pick.

In a few short months the chicks are all grown up.

So, like their Moms and Dads they’re off to the sea.

They slide down the icy slopes and in to the sea they dive.

They feed off lots of krill and play happily, play happily.

THE PENGUIN EGG

Words by Yurgen Ilaender  (Folk Melody)

Talk – Do Daddy penguins lay eggs too? No. But Daddy emperor penguins do help to hatch the eggs.

Here is a silly song about what Daddy emperor penguins have to do.

WHEN A MOMMY PENGUIN,   LAYS HERSELF AN EGG

SHE GIVES THE EGG TO DADDY, THEN QUICKLY RUNS AWAY

DADDY HAS TO STAND THERE,   UNTIL THE EGG IS HATCHED

MOMMY GETS TO PARTY,  AND FIND HERSELF SOME SNACKS

DADDY STANDS FOR DAYS AND DAYS, THE EGG UPON HIS FEET

AND WHILE HE’S CALMLY WAITING,   HE GETS NOTHING TO EAT

SO, IF YOU ARE A DADDY, AND MOM BRINGS YOU AN EGG

KEEP YOUR FEET A-MOVING ,  AND QUICKLY RUN AWAY.

(WHOOSH – BYE!)

FLYING BIRDS OF ANTARCTICA

Gary Huntbatch

Chorus:                       THE FLYING BIRDS OF ANTARCTICA

SPREAD THEIR FEATHERED WINGS

OVER THE OCEAN AND SNOWY LAND

GLIDING ON ICY WINDS

Verse 1:

THE GIANT PETREL HAS A TUBULAR NOSE

WITH A GOOD SENSE OF SMELL

IT’ EATS KRILL, FISH AND PENGUIN CHICKS

DEAD WHALES AND SEALS AS WELL

Verse 2:          AN AGGRESSIVE PREDATOR IS THE SKUA

IT’S DIET IS MOSTLY THE SAME

BUT IT WINTER’S IN THE NORTH PACIFIC

AND IN THE SPRING RETURNS AGAIN.

Chorus

THE BLUE EYED SHAG IS A CORMORANT,  THEY NEST ON ROCKY CLIFFS

CLOSE TO THE SEA IS WHERE THEY LIKE TO LIVE,  THEY EAT KRILL AND SQUID AND FISH

Verse 3:       ANOTHER BIRD THAT WINTERS AWAY FROM HOME

AND RETURNS IN EARLY SPRING

IS THE BLACK HEADED GULL THAT FEEDS ON LIMPETS

AND THEY SWALLOW THE WHOLE DARN THING

Verse 4:       THE SHEATHBILL IT LIVES ON THE LAND

THE ONLY BIRD WITHOUT WEBBED FEET

THEY MAKE A MEAL OUT OF ANY DEAD ANIMAL

BUT PENGUIN EGGS AND CHICKS THEY ALSO EAT.  (chorus)

AN ICE RAP

Yurgen Ilaender (Mr. I)

Chorus:   ICE, ICE, ANTARCTICA, ANTARCTICA, ICE, ICE, ANTARCTICA, ICE

I’LL SAY IT ONCE AND I’LL SAY IT TWICE

ANTARCTICA HAS LOTS OF ICE

90 % OF THE ICE ON THIS PLANET

IS RIGHT THERE, IF YOU WANT IT

Chorus

IT’S TAKEN MILLIONS OF YEARS TO ACCUMULATE

IT COVERS THE LAND WITH QUITE A WEIGHT

FROM THE MOUNTAINS DOWN TO WHERE THE OCEANS MEET

THIS IS CALLED THE ICE SHEET

OUT PAST THE LAND AND ONTO THE SEA

LOTS MORE ICE FOR YOU AND ME

GLACIAL ICE, QUITE A MASS ITSELF

THIS IS CALLED THE ICE SHELF

WHEN ICE SHEETS AND GLACIERS MOVE DIFFERENTLY

THEY LEAVE CRACKS IN THE ICE THAT ARE HARD TO SEE

TO A TRAVELER THEY ARE A DANGEROUS MENACE

THIS IS CALLED AN ICE CREVICE

AND RIVERS OF ICE, PLEASE UNDERSTAND

SLOWLY, THEY SLIDE ACROSS THE LAND

THE LARGEST OF THESE IS NAMED,  ‘LAMBERT’

THIS IS CALLED A GLACIER.

Chorus

ICEBERGS FLOAT OUT ON THE SEA,  BITS OF GLACIERS OR ICE SHEETS BROKEN FREE.

WHEN A GIANT PIECE BREAKS OFF OF IT,  THIS IS CALLED A BERGY BIT

BRASH ICE IS SMALLER THAN BERGY BITS, IT’S FRESHWATER ICE, IN THE SEA IT SITS

AND THE FROZEN OCEAN, THE WATER WITH SALT, PACK ICE IS WHAT THIS IS CALLED.

Chorus

ICEBERG

By Mr. I (Yurgen Ilaender) & Gary Huntbatch

ICEBERG,      TALL AS A MOUNTAIN

ICE BERG,     A WHITE FROZEN FOUNTAIN
YOU HAVE BROKEN FREE,
FROM THE HARD, HARD SHORE

FLOATING ON THE SEA.

ICE BERG, CONSTANTLY MOVING,

ICE BERG,   ALWAYS IMPROVING

YOU’RE A BIT LIKE ME,
THERE’S A LOT, LOT MORE,

THAN THE EYE CAN SEE.

CHANGING, CHANGING, CHANGING DAY TO DAY

SHAPES REARRANGING,   NATURE AT PLAY

ICEBERG, TWISTING AND TURNING, ICE BERG, DEEP WATER CHURNING

UNDERNEATH THE SEA, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE, WISH THAT I COULD SEE.

ICEBERG, I LOVE TO LOOK AT YOU. ICE BERG, YOU’RE JUST LIKE A STATUE

LIKE AN ARTIST’S HAND, THE WATER AND THE WIND

HAVE MADE YOU OH SO GRAND.

CHANGING, CHANGING, CHANGING DAY TO DAY,

SHAPES REARRANGING, NATURE AT PLAY.

ICE BERG, WILL I SEE YOU TOMORROW, ICEBERG, OR WILL YOU BE GONE.

YOU’RE A LOT LIKE ME, ALWAYS ON THE MOVE, HAPPY AND FREE

ICEBERG.

THE ANTARCTIC POLAR BEAR

Gary Huntbatch

WE’RE ON AN EXPEDITION

THAT WILL LEAD US TO WHO KNOWS WHERE?

WE’VE GOT LOTS OF FOOD AND MATCHES.

WE’LL COOK ON THE OLD CAMPFIRE.

WE’LL TRACK HIM HIGH , WE’LL TRACK HIM LOW,

AND NOT SHOW ANY FEAR.

WE’LL NOT GO HOME UNTIL WE’VE SEEN

THE ANTARCTIC POLAR BEAR.

No, there are no polar bears in the Antarctic. Yet, it is curious that one of the first things children ask Antarctic scientists is if they’ve ever seen a polar bear. NO huskies here either.

5 LITTLE PENGUINS

(Fingerplay by Yurgen Ilaender)

– could be done as 3 Little Penguins

Action: close fist of right hand to make the rock. Angle arm in front of you so that the ‘rock’ (fist of right hand) is even with left shoulder. The five penguins are fingers of the left hand. Start at  crook of right arm, trying to slide up the beach (forearm and wrist)  the penguins all slip and slide down the arm trying to get to the rock (fist).

The last penguin pinches the rock, jumps and stands (finger straight up) on the rock.

5 LITTLE PENGUINS CLIMBING UP THE BEACH.

TRYING TO MAKE THE ROCK BUT THEY JUST COULDN’T REACH.

THEY SLIPPED AND THEY SLID BACK DOWN TO THE SHORE.

ONE WADDLED AWAY, AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR.

4 LITTLE PENGUINS CLIMBING UP THE BEACH.

TRYING TO MAKE THE ROCK BUT THEY JUST COULDN’T REACH.

THEY SLIPPED AND THEY SLID BACK DOWN TO THE SEA.

ONE SAW A LEOPARD SEAL, AND THEN THERE WERE THREE.

3 LITTLE PENGUINS CLIMBING UP THE BEACH.

TRYING TO MAKE THE ROCK BUT THEY JUST COULDN’T REACH.

THEY SLIPPED AND THEY SLID BACK INTO THE OCEAN BLUE.

ONE SAW A KILLER WHALE, AND THEN THERE WERE TWO.

2 LITTLE PENGUINS CLIMBING UP THE BEACH.

TRYING TO MAKE THE ROCK BUT THEY JUST COULDN’T REACH.

THEY SLIPPED AND THEY SLID BACK INTO THE OCEAN.

ONE SWAM HOME, AND THEN THERE WAS ONE

1 LITTLE PENGUIN CLIMBING UP THE BEACH.

TRYING TO MAKE THE ROCK BUT HE/SHE JUST COULDN’T REACH.

HE FLIPPED WITH HIS FLIPPER AND HE BIT WITH HIS BEAK.

AND HE MADE IT TO THE ROCK AT THE TOP OF THE BEACH.

CCC COOOK!

(penguin sound)

PENGUIN POEM

(By Gary Huntbatch)

MACARONI ARE THE PENGUINS

WHO LIVE IN THE ICE AND SNOOOOO’

WITH ADELIE, CHINSTRAP, ROCKHOPPER, KING

EMPEROR AND GENTOO TOO

THEY FISH, THEY PLAY

THEY LIE IN THE SUN

HAVING LOTS OF FUN

BUT WHEN THERE’S A COLD, COLD BREEZE

THEY SNUGGLE TO EACH OTHER

SO NONE OF THEM WILL FREEZE.

What’s snooooo?   Nothing much, what’s new with you?
