DISCOVERING AUSTRALIA
(Gary Huntbatch) 2001
Chorus: DISCOVERING AUSTRALIA, DISCOVERING AUSTRALIA
DISCOVERING AUSTRALIA, WITH THE FAMOUS CAPTAIN COOK.
Verse 1: CAPTAIN COOK HE FOUND AUSTRALIA,
WITHOUT KNOWING IT WAS LOST
FINDING NEW ANIMALS, PLANTS AND PEOPLE
FROM ALL AROUND IT’S COAST.
KOALA, WALLABY, KANGAROO, AND THE COCKATOO TOO
WITH LOTS OF SHARKS AND CROCODILES ALL WAITING TO EAT YOU.
(I say, I say, did you say ‘eat you’? Oops, yes I did. Sorry, I meant to say ‘meet you’, not eat you, sorry.)
Chorus
Verse 2: COOK ARRIVED IN 1770, HE HIT THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
HIS SHIP WAS CALLED THE ENDEAVOR, AND AND EVER DID IT LEAK!
HE MADE REPAIRS AND THEN SET SAIL, EXPLORING AS HE WENT
CLAIMING AUSTRALIA FOR ENGLAND, FROM WHERE HE HAD BEEN SENT
(I say, I say, From where he had been sent? Isn‘t that poor grammar. Uh, yes, it is, but Grandma is feeling much better now, thank you.)
Chorus
Verse 3:
AUSTRALIA IS LIKE AN ISLAND, SURROUNDED BY THE SEA
BUT IT’S CALLED A CONTINENT, CAUSE IT’S BIG AS BIG CAN BE
IT HAS DESERTS AND RAIN FORESTS, HIGH MOUNTAINS LAKES AND RIVERS
WITH LOTS OF BIRDS AND REPTILES, AND NOT TO MENTION SPIDERS
(Spiders, did you say spiders?. Yes, I did , but I said not to mention them.)
Chorus

BOWER, BOWER, BOWER BOWER, BIRD
THE WAY THAT YOU BEHAVE IS QUITE ABSURD
BUILDING PRETTY HOUSES, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING OF?
TELL ME BOWERBIRD, ARE YOU IN LOVE?
BOWER BOWER BOWER BOWER BIRD

BOWER BIRD, YOU’RE A WINGED MATISSE,
I ALWAYS SMILE WHEN I THINK OF YOU
O BOWER BOWER BOWER BOWER BIRD
AUSTRALIA IS THE HOME THAT YOU’VE PREFERRED
I CAN SEE YOU IN THE FOREST, IN A EUCALYPTUS TREE
BUILDING PRETTY BOWERS, DANCING HAPPILY,
O BOWERBIRD PLEASE, SAVE A WINK FOR ME
SAVE A WINK FOR ME, SAVE A WINK FOR ME.
SAVE A WINK —– FOR ME! (wink)
KOOKABURRA (Traditional Folk Song from Australia)
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra
Gay your life must be.
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gum drops he can see
Stop, Kookaburra, Stop kookaburra
Save some there for me.
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Counting all the monkeys he can see
Wait, Kookaburra, wait, kookaburra
That’s not a monkey, That’s me !
MARSUPIAL LAND
(Gary Huntbatch)
Spoken: When people first hear the word, marsupial, their first thought is the ‘soup’ ma used to make. But surprisingly, although it could be, it isn’t. Let me tell about marsupials.
A MARSUPIAL IS AN ANIMAL, THAT REALLY IS QUITE UNUSUAL
THEIR BABIES AREN’T BORN IN THE USUAL WAY
THEY ARE SO VERY TINY AND THEY HAVE TO STAY
IN A POUCH, THAT IS PART OF THE MOTHER’S SKIN
AND WHEN THE BABY IS BORN, OH,IT CLIMBS RIGHT IN.
Chorus:
: THEY ARE MARSUPIALS, MARSUPIALS, THEY ARE MAR..MARSUPIALS.
WHEN THE BABY IS INSIDE IT IS, SAFE AND SNUG
IT FEEDS ON MOTHER’S MILK WITH A COSY HUG
SPENDING IT’S TIME IN THE POUCH DAY AFTER DAY
UNTIL IT’S OLD ENOUGH TO COME OUT AND PLAY
IT’S A PROTECTED PLACE WHERE BABY LIVES AND GROWS
AND SO, WHEREVER MOMMA GOES, BABY GOES
– Chorus-
THEY MOSTLY ALL LIVE IN AUSTRALIA
AUSTRALIA, IS A MARSUPIAL LAND.
A KANGAROO IS A MARSUPIAL, SO IS A TASMANIAN DEVIL
AND THERE’S THE WOMBAT, LOOKS LIKE A BABY BEAR
A BURROWING CREATURE WITH CUDDLY FUR.
THE POSSUM AND THE BANDICOOT HAVE POUCH MAMMAS TOO
AND SO DOES THE KOALA, OH, DIDN’T YOU KNOW.
-Chorus-
KANGAROO JUMP (Mr. I)
KANGAROO JUMP OVER THE STUMP, KANGAROO JUMP
JUMP JUMP JUMP
KANGAROO HOP OVER THE TOP, KANGAROO HOP
HOP HOP HOP
KANGAROO FLEE OVER THE TREE, KANGAROO FLEE
FLEE FLEE FLEE
KANGAROO FLY OVER THE SKY, KANGAROO FLY
FLY FLY FLY
KANGAROO RUN OVER THE SUN, KANGAROO RUN
RUN RUN RUN
KANGAROO ZOOM OVER THE MOON, KANGAROO ZOOM
ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM
KANGAROO JUMP OVER THE STUMP, KANGAROO JUMP
JUMP JUMP JUMP
(Now go ahead and invent your own)
KANGAROO RACE OUT INTO SPACE, KANGAROO RACE
RACE, RACE, RACE!

They call me lady a Jill, but others may call her flyer.
They call our kid a joey, but he likes the name of Bob.
But when roo’s all get together they calls us a mob.
Chorus
Well, there’s forty -seven different kinds of kangaroos.

I’m a roo tee diddle-ee doo, a kangaroo.
DINGO DOG
(Yurgen Ilaender, Mr. I)
DINGO DOG, DINGO DOG, WHY CAN’T YOU BARK?
DID YOUR TONGUE GET BITTEN OFF, BY A SHARK?
DINGO DOG, DINGO DOG, THAT’S A FUNNY TAIL.
TELL ME, DID YOU TAKE IT,,,, FROM A WHALE?
DINGO DOG, DINGO DOG, WHAT A SILLY SMILE.

KARLA KOALA (Gary Huntbatch)
A koala is a koala it’s a very simple fact
I’m telling It’s oh so true so get in on the act
Why don’t people know it could it be they just don’t care
I’m just a plain koala not a Koala bear
I will be the bearer the bearer of the news
I’ve been called a bear for far too long I’ve nothing left to loose
I know I’m cute and cuddly like a fluffy ball of fur
But I’m just a plain Koala not a Koala bear
bridge
We raise our babies differently I have a pouch you see
When they are borne it’s where they live a marsupial they call me
I don’t spend much time upon the ground searching for my food
A eucalyptus tree’s the place for me I’m not a bear so.don’t be rude
I can hardly bear it the bare facts are plainly there
It’s unbearable a bare faced lie it really isn’t fair
I’ll tell you all just one more time a truth that I will share
I’m just a plain Koala not a Koala bear
I’M A KOALA (Mr. I)
I’m a koala. I’m a happy fella
I eat eucalyptus leaves.
I’m a koala I’m a happy fella
I live in eucalyptus trees.
I am not a bear you know.
I’m what’s called a marsupial
I carry babies in my pouch
In Australia way down south.
I’m a koala. I’m a happy fella
I eat eucalyptus leaves.
I’m a koala I’m a happy fella
I live in eucalyptus trees.
THE BAOBAB TREE
Yurgen Ilaender (Mr. I)
IT’S FAT ON THE BOTTOM AND THIN ON THE TOP
IT LOOKS LIKE A GREAT BIG BOTTLE OF POP
IT’S BRANCHES GROW FROM SIDE TO SIDE
IT HAS GREEN LEAVES AND IT’S VERY ALIVE
Chorus: IT’S THE BAOBAB TREE, THE BAOBAB TREE
GO TO AUSTRALIA AND YOU WILL SEE
THE BAOBAB TREE, THE BAOBAB TREE
IT LOOKS LIKE A BOTTLE, BUT IT’S NOT REALLY.
THERE ARE OTHER TREES AND HERE ARE SOME
IRONBANK, EUCALYPTUS AND THE RED GUM
LOTS OF TREES GROWING WILD,
BUT THE FUNNIEST TREE THAT WILL MAKE YOU SMILE
chorus
THERE’S ANOTHER TREE HAS A REALLY HOT NAME
BRIGHT RED FLOWERS AND IT LOOKS LIKE A FLAME
THIS IS CALLED A FLAME TREE
LOOKS REAL PRETTY BUT IT’S QUITE STINKY
chorus.
ABORIGINES USED THE BOOMERANG
(Yurgen Ilaender, (Mr. I)
Chorus: ABORIGINES USED THE BOOMERANG,
ABORIGINES USED THE BOOMERANG,
ABORIGINES USED THE BOOMERANG
TO HUNT AND CATCH THEIR FOOD
ABORIGINES USED THE BOOMERANG
ABORIGINES USED THE BOOMERANG
ABORIGINES USED THE BOOMERANG
TO HUNT AND CATCH THEIR FOOD.

I SEE A KANGAROO, COMING THIS WAY
READY WITH MY BOOMERANG, NOW THROW, NOW THROW.

Verse two:
FOUND WATER WITH MY DIGGING STICK
IT’S BEEN A VERY GOOD DAY

I WILL PAINT MY STORY, IN A CAVE ON A ROCK
WITH FRESH PAINT ON MY BODY, I’LL BE READY
FOR ANOTHER WALK
(Chorus)
Verse three:
THE SEASON IS CHANGING NOW, MUST GO TO NEW LAND
FOLLOWING MARKS I LEFT, IN THE SAND

WITH MY BOOMERANG IN MY HAND. Chorus
ULURU ( AYERS ROCK)
Mr. I, Yurgen Ilaender(August, 2001)
Chorus:
OOO, OOO, U – LU– RU, HOO HOO
OOO, OOO, U – LU– RU, HOO HOO
Verse 1) IT LOOKS LIKE A MOUNTAIN, BUT IT’S ACTUALLY A ROCK
A RED, LOAF OF BAKED BREAD, SITTING ON A TABLE TOP
THE TABLE IS THE DESERT, TANAMI IS IT’S NAME
THE LOAF OF BREAD IS AYERS ROCK, THROUGH THE WORLD IT HAS GREAT FAME..
ABORIGINES OF LONG AGO, WERE THE ONES WHO FOUND IT
IT’S A SIX MILE HIKE, IF YOU WANT TO WALK AROUND IT.
ONE THOUSAND FEET HIGH, ONE MILE AND A HALF LONG,
IT’S A PLACE OF MAGIC CEREMONY, LISTEN TO IT’S SONG,
Chorus: (four times, add harmony)
A BEND IN THE RIVER, ONE MILLION YEARS AGO
GIANT ROCKS WERE STOPPED AND CRUSHED AS THE RIVER CHANGED IT’S FLOW
AND NOW IT’S THE BIGGEST, ROCK ON THE EARTH
IN THE CENTER OF AUSTRALIA, IN THE RED AND ORANGE DIRT
IRON OXIDE IN THE SANDSTONE MAKES IT ORANGE AND RED
IT SITS BY THE CITY OF ALICE SPRINGS LIKE A LOAF OF FRESH-BAKED BREAD
IT’S GUARDED BY THE MUTIJULU, AND THEY WILL NEVER LEAVE.
GREAT SPIRITS LIVE IN THE ROCK, IT’S WHAT THEY BELIEVE.
Chorus (six time, add harmony)
NUMALU’S WALKABOUT/ DIDGERIDOO STORY
(Written by DON PORTELANCE) 604-936-2686
NUMALU (Noo mah loo) was lonely, hungry and a little afraid. He had been on his ‘walkabout’ for two weeks now, and he had two more weeks to go before he could return to his tribe. His solitary journey through the desert was part of his initiation into manhood. He was twelve years old.
Food had been scarce. He sat at the shore of the billibong and listened to the sounds: the dove ///// the frog///// the flies and mosquitoes/////. Far off in the distant hills he could hear the dingo cries/////. Perhaps he will become a meal for a pack of dingos? The crows swooped overhead///// and the kookaburas laughed at him/////.
Just then, a family of kangaroos bounded to the edge of the water. Mother Kangaroo came first, bounding eagerly /////, followed by the huge leaps of father /////, and bringing up the rear was a little baby joey, /////. Numalu would have loved to eat kangaroo that night, but it was not possible. You see, the very day that Numalu was born his mother saw a kangaroo, and since that day the kangaroo became his special totem animal. And no member of the tribe can eat his totem animal, no matter how hungry he is. The kangaroos left, /////, /////, /////.
Suddenly, Numalu’s sensitive ears picked up a faint drumming sound/////. The thumping sound came from an unsuspecting emu that had wandered close to him. A meal at last. But first to catch it. These birds were so fast they could outrun kangaroos. His heartbeat quickened/////. He crept slowly through the grass. When he felt he could wait no longer he sprang out. The emu saw him and began to run/////. He could not catch it. But, with an expert flick of his wrist he tossed his boomerang///// and brought the emu down/////.
Tonight he would eat. His survival was now certain. In two short weeks he would return to his tribe, no longer a boy, but Numalu the man.
DIDGERIDOO SONG
(Yurgen Ilaender, Mr. I)
Chorus: DIDGERIDOO, DIDGERIDOO,
MOST PEOPLE CAN’T EVEN SAY IT, TELL ME CAN YOU
DIDGERIDOO, DIDGERIDOO,
IT’S AN INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY IT, KIND OF LIKE A BIG KAZOO
Verse 1) DIDGERIHEAR ABOUT THE DIDGERIDOO,
IT’S A HOLLOW STICK YOU CAN SEE RIGHT THROUGH
IT MAKES A SOUND THAT SEEMS BRAND NEW,
BUT IT’S OLD , OLD, OLD.
DIDGERIHEAR ABOUT THE DIDGERIDOO,
YES, YOU CAN LEARN TO PLAY ONE TOO,
VIBRATE YOUR LIPS AND ALL YOU DO IS BLOW , BLOW, BLOW,
Chorus:
Verse 2) DIDGERIKNOW ABOUT THE ABORIGINES
THEY USED THE DIDGERIDOO IN CEREMONIES
IT’S ANCIENT VOICE WOULD TELL STORIES SO TRUE TRUE TRUE
DIDGEREEKNOW ABOUT THE TIME OF DREAMS
WAY BEFORE CARS, OR FLYING MACHINES
WHEN THE ROCKS AND TREES AND RIVERS AND STREAMS
WERE NEW NEW NEW
DIDGERIDOO, DIDGERIDOO……
OLD MAN GATHERED ALL THE ANIMALS TOGETHER
THERE WAS TO BE A CONTEST
OLD MAN WOULD MAKE AN INSTRUMENT IN THE LIKENESS OF THE CREATURE WHO HAD THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VOICE
ALL THE ANIMALS KNEW THAT NIGHTINGALE WOULD WIN.
HER SONG WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL.
BUT, SURREPTITIOUS SNAKE SWALLOWED NIGHTINGALE
AND HELD HER IN HIS MOUTH.
WHEN OLD MAN LISTENED TO SNAKE HE HEARD NIGHTINGALE’S BEAUTIFUL SONG.
OLD MAN DECLARED SNAKE THE WINNER. BUT, HE WAS FOOLED.
SNAKE SLITHERED AWAY IN SHAME,
HE OPENED HIS MOUTH AND AWAY NIGHTINGALE FLEW
AND WHEN OLD MAN BLEW,
INSTEAD OF A SWEET, LOFTY SONG, OUT CAME THE DEEP, EARTHY DRONE OF THE FIRST DIDGERIDOO.
Chorus
Verse 3) SO NOW YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DIDGERIDOO
YES, YOU CAN LEARN TO PLAY ONE TOO
VIBRATE YOUR LIPS AND ALL YOU DO IS BLOW BLOW BLOW
DIDGERIHOLD IT TIGHTLY IN YOUR HANDS
BLOW REAL HARD, YOU KNOW YOU CAN
LET’S MAKE SOME MUSIC, WE’LL MAKE A BAND
LET’S GO GO GO LET’S GO!
DESERT POEM
(Gary Huntbatch)
SPEAKING OF CENTRAL AUSTRALIA
IT’S MADE UP MOSTLY OF SAND.
A HOT, DRY AND DUSTY PLACE,
THIS FLAT AND BARREN LAND.
THERE’S THE SIMPSON DESERT, THE GIBSON DESERT
THE GREAT VICTORIA DESERT, THE GREAT SANDY DESERT TOO.
LOTS OF SPIDERS, SNAKES AND SCORPIONS
WITH NOTHING MUCH TO DO.
SOME CALL THE DESERT THE ‘OUTBACK’
OTHERS CALL IT THE ‘RED CENTER’
BY THE ‘GREAT EMPTY’ IT’S ALSO KNOWN
AND IT’S EASY TO GET LOST THERE.
THE HEAT CAN SOAR TO ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY DEGREES.
YOU’D GET SUNBURNED AS YOU WALKED.
IF THAT HAD HAPPENED TO CAPTAIN COOK,
THEY WOULD HAVE CALLED HIM, CAPTAIN COOKED!
SO, IF YOU’RE IN THIS LAND OF OZ
JUST HOP INTO A CAR.
DRIVE A LITTLE INLAND FROM THE COAST.
AND YOU WON’T GET VERY FAR
BEFORE YOU REACH THE DESERT,
IT’S ALL THAT’S IN THE MIDDLE.
BUT THE DESSERT THAT I LIKE THE MOST,
IS ICE CREAM, MAKE THAT RASPBERRY RIPPLE!
WALTZING MATILDA
ONCE A JOLLY SWAGMAN, CAMPED BY A BILLABONG
UNDER THE SHADE OF A COOLIBAH TREE
AND HE SANG AS HE WATCHED AND WAITED TILL HIS BILLY BOILED
YOU’LL COME A WALTZING MATILDA WITH ME.
Chorus: WALTZING MATILDA, WALTZING MATILDA,
YOU’LL COME A WALTZING MATILDA WITH ME
(Sing the last two lines of each verse for the each chorus)
AND HE SANG AS HE WATCHED AND WAITED TILL HIS BILLY BOILED, YOU’LL COME A WALTZING MATILDA WITH ME.
DOWN CAME A JUMPBUCK TO DRINK AT THE BILLABONG
UP JUMPED THE SWAGMAN AND GRABBED HIM WITH GLEE
AND HE SANG AS HE STOWED THAT JUMPBUCK IN HIS TUCKERBAG
YOU’LL COME A WALTZING MATILDA WITH ME.
Chorus in Aborigine language:
NYANPEE MATILDA, NYANPEE MATILDA,
NYOON TOO MATILDA, NYANPEE, NYI OO LA
MOONOO NYA KOOLA ING KANG,
BILLY PALLY RIN CHAKOO
NYOON TOO MATILDA, NYANPEE, NYI OO LA.
UP RODE THE SQUATTER, MOUNTED ON HIS THOROUGHBRED
DOWN CAME THE TROOPERS, ONE TWO THREE
WHERE’S THAT JOLLY JUMPBUCK , YOU’VE GOT HIM IN YOUR TUCKERBAG YOU’LL COME A WALTZING MATILDA WITH ME.
chorus in Aborigine language
UP JUMPED THE SWAGMAN, RIGHT INTO THE BILLIBONG
YOU’LL NEVER CATCH ME ALIVE SAID HE
AND HIS GHOST MAY BE HEARD AS YOU RIDE BESIDE THE BILLIBONG
YOU’LL COME A WALTZING MATILDA WITH ME.
Chorus in English: spooky last line. ‘YOU’LL COME A WALTZING MATILDA WITH ME…..BOO!’
THE DEADLY LAND OF OZ
(Gary Huntbatch)
Spoken: THERE ARE LOTS OF POISONOUS, AND OTHERWISE, DEADLY CREATURES IN THE LAND OF OZ, ALSO KNOW AS AUSTRALIA. THIS SONG IS ABOUT SOME OF THEM.
THEY CALL IT THE LAND DOWN UNDER,
BUT YOU MIGHT BE SIX FEET DOWN UNDER, THE GROUND
IF YOU DON’T WATCH OUT ON A WALKABOUT
OR A SWIM ABOUT, FOR WHAT MIGHT JUMP OUT
THAT’S LURKING AROUND THE CORNER.
IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA.
OH IN THE LAND OF OZ, BE CAREFUL BECAUSE
OF THE TIGER SNAKE AND THE DEADLY, BROWN SNAKE
ONE BITE WILL MAKE YOUR BODY ACHE
THERE’S THE DEATH ADDER, OR THE TAIPAN SNAKE
OH, THE PYTHON WILL CRUSH YOU AND SWALLOW YOU WHOLE,
IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA,
IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA,
ON IN THE LAND OF OZ, BE CAREFUL BECAUSE
OF WHERE YOU SIT CAUSE YOU MIGHT GET BIT.
BY A BLACK WIDOW SPIDER, SHE’S A VERY GOOD HIDER
AND THE FUNNEL SPIDER’S NO FUN AT ALL
CAUSE IF YOU GET BIT, THAT’S ALL, THAT’S IT.
IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA,
IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA.
ON IN THE WATERS OF OZ, BE CAREFUL BECAUSE
OF THE CROCODILE, YOU WON’T EVER SEE HIM SMILE
AND HE WON’T GRIN IF YOU TICKLE HIS CHIN
BUT WHEN HE OPENS HIS MOUTH, YOU’LL FIT RIGHT IN
AND THEN HE’LL TAKE YOU, FOR A LITTLE SWIM.
IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA,
IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA
OH IN THE WATERS OF OZ, BE CAREFUL BECAUSE
OF THE TENTACLES OF THE LION FISH,
YOU TOUCH THEM, AND THEY WILL STING
THE STONE FISH TOO, KEEP AWAY FROM THAT THING
IF THE CROCODILE MISSED YOU THERE’S A BOX JELLYFISH
OR YOU MIGHT END UP AS A SHARK’S TASTY DISH
IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA, IN BEAUTIFUL SUNNY AUSTRALIA
Spoken:
I SAY, I SAY, DO YOU THINK THAT’S WHY AUSTRALIA HAS ‘TERRORTORIES’. GOOD HEAVENS, YES! AND WITH LOTS OF ‘TERROR STORIES’ TOO.
COME SEE US MATE.
